If They Could See Me Now, the Paul Potts Saga
I wonder what the bullies who made school-life hell for Britain’s
Got Talent winner, Paul Potts, think when they see him now? I hope
they were watching when Paul wowed us all with his powerful and
emotional performance that was also pitch-perfect?
The relentless teasing about his weight and his clothes, and the
name-calling that went with it, made Paul Potts want to hurl himself
down flights of stairs so the bullies might feel sorry for him if he
got injured. These bullies were the very people who drove him to the
great love of his life – apart from wife Julie-Ann (Julz), of course – and
that is - music.
Often Paul Potts would seek refuge in the music room at lunchtimes,
where he knew he’d be safe. And it was there Paul Potts fell in love
with classical music and opera in particular, drawn to the sadness
and beauty in the music.
Those bullies and a rocky home-life left Paul Potts severely lacking
in self-confidence. He has said his voice was his ‘best friend’ in
these times.
“I just can’t believe it. I’m waiting for someone to pinch me and
say, ‘Get out of bed. You’ve got to work. You’re late again,’” Paul
Potts, 36, said during an exclusive interview Thursday with TODAY
host Meredith Vieira.
Well, Paul Pots won’t be returning to work as a mobile phone
salesman. Now his job is making records and singing for the Queen!
Paul Potts, as modest as ever, is grateful for it all.
“It’s been a mind-blowing experience, really, to be on ‘Britain’s
Got Talent’ and meeting Simon Cowell, and get the response I had
from them,” Potts said. “It’s incredible. It’s changing my life,” he
told the TODAY audience.
On the way to his Britain’s Got Talent crown, Paul Potts’s singing
was so beautiful and moving that it made audience members both in
the studio and at home cry. I know because I was one of them!
Paul Pots has no fancy ideas to blow his winnings. He plans to pay
off his debts, get his teeth fixed and hopefully start a family with
loving and supportive wife Julie-Ann (Julz).
